The gutters of your house have an important job. They collect all the water that falls on your roof and carry it to the downspouts. The downspouts then carry the water down from the gutters to the ground, and away from the foundation of your house. However, your gutters don't just collect the water, they also catch all the leaves, twigs, and debris that fall on your roof. When it rains, all that stuff gets washed into the gutters, and ideally gets washed along the gutters and down into the downspout, but that isn't always what happens. That means that your gutters get clogged and they aren't able to do their job. So, what can you do? Well, you clean your gutters out. 

Cleaning Your Gutters 

You should clean your gutters often throughout the year. Some people choose to do it in the spring to make sure that the gutters are all ready for the weather that happens in the summer. Others choose to do it in the fall. The goal of the job is to get everything that is in the gutters out of them so that the water isn't getting blocked and is able to flow through the gutters and so nothing is growing in the gutters. Cleaning your gutters can be easy, depending on how tall your house is and how high up your gutters are. It's something that you can do yourself if you feel comfortable doing it. 

Gather Your Tools

You are going to need to get all your tools together. That includes a ladder so that you can reach your gutters and a pair of work gloves so that you don't hurt your hands or get them covered with all kinds of gunk while you are digging around in the gutter. You may also want to have a bucket or bag so that you can put all the stuff in that container instead of just throwing it on the ground. A reaching or grabbing tool would be helpful as well, but not necessary. The tool will let you get things that are on the roof that you can't reach with your hands and that you don't want to have on the roof. You will have to get down regularly so that you can move your ladder to get to a new part of your gutter. 

Cleaning your gutters is important. You may not feel comfortable cleaning them or your gutters may be too high for you to get to them, which means you need to hire a gutter cleaning company to do the work for you.
